Hair care

the mystery of a makeover

Slip into the salon and join Meagan, Jess, and Sabra for HairCARE. On this episode of MYSTERIOUSLY BASIC, glimpse into the mysterious world of beauty, glamour, and aesthetics. More than just a haircut, or a photo shoot. Which in all honesty was the full intentions upon arrival, with some girl talk to be recorded. This trip to the salon became a beautiful collaboration of hearts, minds, and hair. With the snip of the scissors, the hair was gone, but far from forgotten. With Meagan’s hair eligible for donation to be made into wigs, this sparks an unexpected discussion regarding aesthetics and well-being. In HairCARE you can expect to hear more about hair donation, and its significant impact on your community. As well as topics such as intimacy in the salon chair, self-expression and capturing the perfect photo. Plus, more.

All photographs captured by Jes.

HairCARE was recorded from the warm and cozy comforts of the masterful hairstylist, Sabra’s home-based salon.

About the Guests

Jes (or jb, to some) Beck

storyteller, magic maker, and full-time day-dreamer. I love weird and wild things, the colour black, my dogs, popcorn, spontaneity, champagne, and sad songs. my love of photography started long before I owned a camera, where you'd be able to catch me making a frame with my hands, trying to capture the magic of each fleeting moment. since then, I’ve strived to create a vibrant intersection of creativity and connection. in a world that often craves division, my goal has always been simple: to be kind. whether through my work or personal interactions, I want to cultivate spaces where every individual feels not just acknowledged, but truly valued and seen. With the support of my amazing partner, I’ve been able to spend the last decade+ growing my business, volunteering within my community, baking cookies and raising the next generation of revolutionary rebel girls, also known as #thefuture (Bella + Arya). originally from Calgary, I am now based in Lethbridge, AB. I have enjoyed immersing myself in the community, and culture of the windy city but I tend to be a willing wanderer & love seeing where my craft can take me. Through photography and the beauty of human connection, I get to help people share their stories, exactly as they are.

Sabra Roberts

I have had the privilege of welcoming clients onto my chair since 2009. I have a deep passion for intimate conversations and connection + there is nothing better than making someone feel like the best version of themselves and reminding them how wonderful they are. In 2015 I stepped away from a traditional salon setting to take on my role as a Mom after the birth of our oldest daughter. I have been blessed to be able to continue welcoming long-time clients into my home-based business over the last eight years while still being able to be the primary caregiver to our three beautiful, healthy, happy children. Now all three of our children are nearing school age I am looking forward to embracing new connections while welcoming new clients into my home-based salon. My favourite part of my job is creating lifelong friendships with my clients. It is such a privilege to have people in my home, to share space with me while trusting me to enhance their natural beauty as well as to hold space for them to share all of life’s milestones, big and small. I have found working from home offers a higher level of one-on-one connection with clients, offering them a more intimate setting to feel more comfortable and relaxed in opening up and sharing what’s on their minds and hearts.

Angel Hair For Kids

“Every year thousands of Canadian children lose their hair to cancer treatments, alopecia and other medical causes. At Angel Hair For Kids, we believe the act of providing a wig or hair loss solution will increase a child’s self-esteem and confidence during a difficult time in their young lives.

Founded in 2002 by Roslyn Yearwood and Amalia Ruggiero, this special program is unlike any other and is the only one of its kind in Canada. Each Angel Hair For Kids recipient is given a personal appointment at a salon that specializes in wigs and hair loss.

Using hair and financial donations generously donated to the program, Angel Hair For Kids provides wigs and hair systems to recipients at no cost to the child’s family. It typically takes between 10 and 12 donated ponytails and $2,000 to sponsor one Angel Hair For Kids child.

With care and compassion the experts walk the child and their family through the process of selecting a wig or hair loss solution that meets their needs. Once selected, the hair prosthesis is fitted and styled especially for that child, making it their very own.”
